  • A few months later
  • 3 mathematicians have saved the city of Toronto with their amazing math skills!
  • That's right! They came up with a function that would allow them to figure out when to evacuate the city when radiation got too much for humans too handle!
  • Around 40 hours ago a powerplant in downtown Toronto has exploded emitting waves of radiation into the city! We have limited data and information on how fast the radiation is increasing leaving the city worried they might not have much time left in their homes! The only information we have is that the initial measurement of radiation is 5 rad and it has increased by 2.5% every hour since the explosion.
  • Oh no! What are we going to do?
  • Powerplant in Downtown Toronto Malfunctions!
  • I might have an idea...
  • Have you guys seen this article yet?
  • rad (R) = unit of radiation
  • Initial Radiation = 5 rad
  • Increasing rate of 2.5%
  • R(t) = 5(1.025)ᵗR(40) = 5(1.025)⁴⁰R(40) = 13.425 rad
  • Well when you use that function, you can already calculate how much radiation there is in the city right now! Just but t=40 and calculate!
  • This is all the information we have. With this, we can create an exponential function to predict the amount of radiation every hour.
