- Doña Victorina walks around the town with her lame husband as she observed how the indolent Indians kept their houses and fields. She was dressed as elegantly as possible to make them realize the distance between them and her sacred person. Along the way they met the Alfarez who only stared at her costume mockingly.
- You ought not to shake hands with a mere alfarez! You don' know how to maintain your rank!

- You're only tongue and spittle Doña Excelencia!
- They passed by Doña Consolacion and the two señoras measured each other with looks. Doña Consolacion soon turned her back and spat on the ground, making Doña Victorina extremely angry and decided to confront her. The women soon started bickering insults with each other despite their husbands stopping them.
- I'm going to smash that mouth of yours! Querida of a battalion! Filthy old hag!

- The people started to spectate what was going on but unfortunately, the curate came along and restored order. After that, Doña Victorina and her husband fought on their way home.

- Linares was talking with Sinang, Maria Clara and Victoria as he was startles at the appearance of his cousins. Doña Victorina started demanding him to challenge the Alfarez and threatened him that he'll reveal who he is if he don't.
- At the same time, Capitan Tiago came out of the cockpit. Doña Victorina relayed what had happened to Capitan Tiago and told him not to give his daughter, Maria Clara to Linares if he does not go and challenge the Alfarez.
- That very same night, the marries couple gathered their effects together and presented Capitan Tiago with a bill which amounted to several thousand pesos. Very early the following day, they left to Manila, committing to the bashful Linares the office of avenger.
