In 500 BCE the Persians conquered all of Anatolia. Many Ionian Greeks lived on the west coast of Anatolia and wanted to revolt against the Persians because of the conquest. The Athenians decided to help the Ionians revolt.

The Persians were angry that the Athenian Greeks had helped the Ionians revolt. Thus, the Persians declared war on Greece.

In the Battle of Marathon, 490 BCE, Greeks used a Phalanx against the Persians. Even though the Greeks were outnumbered, they won the battle by using a good battle strategy.

After the Battle of Marathon, the Persians were going to attack Athens. Pheidippides was told to run 26 miles to Athens to warn the Athenians that the Persians were coming. When he got to Athens he yelled "Joy to you, we've won" and then dropped dead.

During the Battle of Thermopylae, 480 BCE, the Spartans battled the Persians. King Leonidas led an army of 300 men. The Spartans were trying to block the Persians from getting to Athens. The Persians slaughtered the king and his men. The Spartans sacrificed themselves for Greece.

In the Battle of Salamis, 480 BCE, Themistocles tricked Xerxes into thinking that the Athenian navy was retreating. The Persian ships could not fit through the narrow area at sea. They were trapped and the Athenians smashed their spears into the ship.
