  • Steve Biko was born on December 18th 1946 in Tarkastad, Eastern Cape. His father died when he was only 4 which was a struggle for his mother trying to raise her family and educate her children.
  • When Steve Biko got older many of the universities were still segregated. Biko went to The Medical School of Natal University with some of the smartest black students of South Africa,
  • Biko needs to be stopped!
  • Biko and his friends got together to talk about Black Consciousness, and read about civil rights activists in the USA. Then in 1969 Biko set up a students union for blacks, The South African Students Organization (SASO).

  • Biko helped set up a health centre called Zanenphilo. He also worked with organizations to create more jobs for blacks and traveled all over South Africa and became known as a powerful speaker who stood up to the white authorities.
  • In 1972 Biko was thrown out of Natal University for neglecting his studies. After this he started to work for the Black Consciousness Convention which helped poor blacks. In 1976 Many students of Soweto looked up to Biko and started uprising to fight for their rights even though Biko didn't contact them.
  • The police were very intimidated because of how Biko was influencing the people so he was arrested in September 1977. They left him naked in his cell for 18 days and tortured him. Then the police put him in a car because he wasn't well and and drove 1,600km to a hospital where he died at 30 years old.
