- So..There are more of us.
- Hello. Welcome to Wilmore University. I'm Jae.
- I mean there are more Black students. I thought I'd be the only one here.
- uhh.. I'm not sure I know what you mean?
- okay...???
- OH yes.. I see.. well there are some of us. follow me I'll explain.
- Welcome to our campus Library. But Yes there are other minority students just not very many.
- But I thought this was a Christian school? Shouldn't it be inclusive to everyone ?
- It should but like most Christian Universities, Wilmore U has little ethnic diversity. The school is 90% White.
- But why ? there are plenty of minority Christians.
- I'm glad you asked. There are many reasons actually.
- The first is De facto segregation. Black colleges were invented during the segregation and Jim Crow era.
- Over time colleges remained segregated many Black students prefer HBCU's over predominantly White institutions.
- I know, that was my second choice..
- Then there's the price. Most minority students can't afford tuition at private Christian Colleges.
- Tell me about it...
- Now everyone' favorite reason...Religious trauma.
- Many minorities have religious trauma due to racism and discrimination from other Christians. So they distrust Christian institutions.
- And while diversity lacks, racism and discrimination on Christian campuses does not.
- Wow those are valid yet heartbreaking reasons..But surely we have plenty of minority professors, right?
- That brings me to my next reason. Lack of representation.
- We have very few minority professors and the ones we do have teach a foreign language. Other than that there aren't many minority staff members.
- Okay..This is all starting to get depressing...
- No worries. We have a great counseling center!
- There SURELY has to be minority representation in the counseling center...
- Not exactly.....
- SO WHO DO WE TURN TO FOR SUPPORT??!!
- We turn to each other....All Eight of us....
- It is going to be a long four years.
- Look on the bright side. You can utilize our very small Multi-cultural section of the Library.
