MAN
As a flash and roar suddenly arrive and disappear, electricity goes out. The people discuss numerous scenarios. Tommy offers his input: there were monsters on the thing that flew by, and they sent a family down in advance; this family is among them, and they are not who they seem to be.
Rising Action
"What was that? A meteor?" (668)
"'They don't want us to leave. That's why they shut everything off.'" (671)
"Charlie slowly raises the gun. As the figure gets closer and closer he suddenly pulls the trigger... the figure, who suddenly lets out a small cry, stumbles forward onto his knees and then falls forward on his face." (679)
Climax
"'No more talk, Steve. You're going to talk us into a grave! You'd let whatever's out there walk right over us, wouldn't yuh? Well, some of us won't!'" (678)
GET BACK HERE! I KNOW IT'S YOU!
NO, IT ISN'T! I SWEAR! IT'S THE KID!
Falling Action
To Charlie's surprise, the figure turns out to be Pete Van Horn; this, in addition to the flickering lights, causes the crowd to erupt with accusations and screams of pure terror, which throws the town into utter chaos.
LOOK! THE LIGHTS!
Well, I think it's either Les or Charlie... It HAS to be!
"'... I didn't know who he was... How was I supposed to know he wasn't a monster or something?... I was just tryin' to... protect my home, that's all... I didn't know it was somebody we knew...'" (680)
Well who do YOU think it is then?
Toward the end, two figures silhouetted against the light of a metal space craft elaborate their conspiracy against the people of the Earth.
Resolution
"'... we'll go from one to the other and let them destroy themselves. One to the other... one to the other... one to the other...'" (684)
