  • set in Paris, France 1880, a young middle class women named Mathilda dreams of having a life of luxury beyond her reach. She's unhappy with what she has already. one day, her husband comes with an invitation to attend a fancy party. Mathilda is pretty worried after reading this as she doesn't have anything proper to wear stand out in that party
  • Mathilda was given 400 francs to buy a dress that would be suitable for the party. however, Mathilda was not satisficed until she asks a wealthy friend for a necklace to borrow
  • Mathilda borrows a necklace for her wealthy friend and is finally ready to be all dressed up for the party
  • "Oh my poor Matilda! Mine was false. It was worth 500 francs at the most"
  • "What I gave back to you was another one just like it. And it took us 10 years to pay for it
  • at the party, Mathilda was a hit! she felt beautiful. but, on the way home, Mathilda lost the necklace. after days of searching, Mathilda and her husband decided to give up and end up buying a new necklace, which was very expensive. it took them 10 yrs to pay for the necklace
  • After 10years of work and struggle, the couples finally pay off their debts.
  • One day, Matilda was walking to the market and sees the friend that she borrowed the necklace from. She tells her what happened. The friend, Madam Forestier, tells Matilda that the necklace was fake and was worth only a small amount of money. The irony of this situation is left for the reader to contemplate.
