Many historians consider Charles to be both the savior and one of the founding fathers of modern Europe. He was a great warrior and statesman who justified his title "the hammer." Charles Martel was a Frankish ruler of the Carolingian line from 718 to 741, and is most known for defeating the Islamic Umayyad Empire at the Battle of Tours in October 732, saving Europe from Islamic dominance.

Pepin the Short reigned as King of the Franks from 751 until 768. He was the first Frankish ruler from the Carolingian Dynasty. Pepin was a competent and prominent ruler of his time, but his reign was overshadowed by his amazing son, Charlemagne. He maintained Boniface's religious reforms and altered Frankish legislation. Pepin also intervened in Italy to support Stephen II's papacy against the Lombards.
Charles the Great ruled much of Western Europe during the Middle Ages. In 771, he was elected to the throne of the Franks, a Germanic tribe. He embarked on a mission to unite the Germanic peoples into one realm while simultaneously converting his adherents to Christianity. He proved himself to be a talented diplomat and capable administrator of the vast realm he controlled as Emperor. He was the motivating factor behind the Carolingian Renaissance, a period distinguished by a renewed focus on learning and culture.
