Senator Henry Clay proposed the Compromise of 1850 which he hoped to seek a compromise and aid a crisis between North and South.
The Compromise of 1850 was significant because it acted as a temporary truce on slavery and addressed territory status after the Mexican- American war.
When Clay proposed the Compromise the first time the Senate rejected it which discouraged Clay and he left. Stephen A. Douglas however picked up where Clay left and began to propose the compromise one resolution at a time hoping to get majority vote. After eight months of Douglas’s effort the compromise was voted into law in 1850.
