- The Academic Beginning of Frederick Douglass By: Adnan Qureshi
- I am Frederick Douglass. I was forced to move to Baltimore because I was sold at the auction to the Auld family. The reason for this is because I don't have rights as a slave.
- Luckily, my "family" were unlike the rest because I was the first slave they havd ever had. This meant that they treated me very well and even helped me gain knowledge by practicing to read. Although, I wasn't very good at it yet.
- I kept on practicing and poof! Like magic, I was able to read. It was like my knowledge skyrocketed.
- I was extremely happy about my new skills. I went and showed them to the husband, although he wasn't happy at all. In fact, he was very angry because a slave like me should not be able to read. My heart stopped like a power outage.
- Even though I wasn't allowed to read. That did not stop me. I started to sell bread to poor white children who needed it in exchange for them helping me to read. Tears of joy ran down my face because I was learning to read.
