- Prince Prospero had spent 6 months in seclusion trying to avoid the plague that was devastating his country. The prince was holding a grand masquerade ball for his knights and wealthy citizens.
- Falling Actions
- As the wealthy nobleshide inside the abbey, they hold a grand masquerade ball to distract themselvesfrom the outside world. However, a mysterious stranger dressed in a costumeresembling the Red Death enters the party and causes unease among the guests.
- Resolution
- The partygoers pursue the mysterious figure dressed as the Red Death through the abbey. They eventually corner the figure in a room at the far end of the abbey. The realization that they cannot escape their fate and the impending doom of the disease creates a sense of dread and hopelessness
- Only Prince Prospero remains alive, but he too is eventually killed by the Red Death. The story ends with the implication that everyone inside the abbey has died.. The figure disappears, and the partygoers realize that it was not a human, but a personification of the Red Death itself.
