  • On 4 May 1789 the last grand ceremony of the Ancien Régime was held in Versailles: the procession of the Estates General. The deputies of the Third Estate dressed in black with a gold and black overcoat. all were holding candles except for those carrying banners. The king himself was wearing an overcoat of golden fabric and was surrounded by the most important Officers to the Crown. The queen was wearing a gold and silver dress.

  • It was a dramatic act of defiance by representatives of the nonprivileged classes of the French nationThe deputies of the Third Estate, realizing that in any attempt at reform they would be outvoted by the two privileged orders, the clergy and the nobility, had formed, on June 17, a National Assembly. Finding themselves locked out of their usual meeting hall at Versailles on June 20 and thinking that the king was forcing them to disband, they moved to a nearby indoor tennis court. There they took an oath never to separate until a written constitution had been established for France.

  • Most of the woman marching on this day to the king just wanted something to be done about the food shortages. But some had other intentions. Some of them wanted to get revenge on the kind or his wife. They marched 12 miles in order to meet the king. After hours of mob violence the kind agreed to come back with them to Paris. The monarchy was relocated to Paris.
  • King Louis XIV fled from the castle in order to launch a counter- rebellion. He still believed that a majority of the country side was still loyal to him. He fled to the frontier to find people who were still loyal to him to protect him. Him and his wife traveled separately over the nearly 200 mile distance they traveled. A small party was gathered to help him and his wife travel swiftly.
