This shrine which he has built must be destroyed. We shall no longer allow it in our midst.
Okonkwo
I have decided that you will pay a fine of two hundred bags of cowries. You will be released as soon as you agree to this and undertake to collect that fine from your people.
What Ajofia, the leading egwugwu of Umuofia said to Mr. Smith before they burnt down his church.
Bong! Bong!
The six leaders of Umuofia are arrested after being called upon by the District Commissioner and are beaten and forced to pay a heavy fine for burning down the church.
Why did he do it?
After their fine is paid, the District Commissioner told them again about the great queen, peace, and good government. The leaders did not want to listen after being humiliated and just went home.
Obierika
That man was one of the greatest men in Umuofia. You drove him to kill himself, and now he will be buried like a dog...
The village crier calls out to the men of Umuofia and bangs on an iron gong to signal them to attend a meeting in the market tomorrow.
Okonkwo kills Kotma during the meeting, but nobody follows his lead. He realizes that Umuofia is no longer the great clan of war that it had once been.
After the meeting at the marketplace, Okonkwo hangs himself. Obierika takes the District Commissioner to where he died and asks him to take him down since only strangers can bury him. The Commissioner has one of his men do it for him since it would make him look bad. He would emphasize this in the book he planned to write.
