This was the bedroom Adeline shared with her Aunt Baba. At home, this was her favorite place because she's not disturbed by other members of the family who despised her. Most especially, she loved this room because her Aunt Baba's with her. She took care of her and was one of the only two family members (the other's her Ye Ye) who loved her, treasured her success and saw her worth as a person.
Adeline loved going to school because she was treated equally there, unlike at home. She was respected and appreciated by her classmates because she had very high marks and many awards. She made friends who cared and looked up to her. She was accelerated several times, and was also elected class president/head girl. She believed that if she studied hard and got awards, she may be loved by her parents and succeed in life.
Boarding schools
In the house in Shanghai where Adeline lived, there were 3 floors -- 1st floor was for the living room, kitchen, garden, etc.; 2nd was where her parents, Ye Ye, fourth brother and little sister stayed; 3rd floor was where the "worse" children stayed. Adeline and her full siblings called the 2nd floor "Holy of Holies". The 2nd floor gets the best treatment. For Adeline and her full siblings, it was very unfair since Niang favored her own children. What's worse was Adeline got the short end of the stick among her full siblings,
Adeline and her family went to the garden to test if their dog, Jackie's training lessons worked. Father asked brother to bring one duckling to the garden, so they can see if Jackie will attack. Brother brought PLT, Adeline's ducking, because he said it would cause him the least trouble. PLT ran towards Adeline upon seeing her. Tempted, Jackie attacked PLT, leaving the ducking almost dead. Adeline felt so scared and worried because her best friend was just sacrificed, which unfortunately, cost its life.
After the incident where Adeline's friends unexpectedly visited her house, she was sent to one boarding school after another. She mostly lived in the boarding schools even during holidays. The first one was in Tianjin at the height of the civil war between the communists and nationalists where the former was winning, thus, putting Adeline and the nuns at the boarding school in danger.Adeline loved the library and reading books. She felt she could escape her real life filled with miseries with books and through writing.
Adeline was unexpectedly called by her dad to come see him at home from boarding school. Surprisingly, her dad looked proud of her after learning that she won first prize in an international play-writing competition, which he heard from his friend at work. This place was memorable to Adeline since it was the place where she saw her dad proud of her and saw her potential. It was where she was able to convince him to send her to England to continue her studies, where her life changed dramatically for the better.
