  • By 1835 those American settlers formed their own temporary government and called for independence, which led to the Mexican government sending Santa Anna, the Mexican leader, to “regain political control.

  • Santa Anna’s troops killed 187 American and Tejano defenders. But a man named Sam Houston took his men to battle and “forced Santa Anna to recognize Texan independence.”
  • The citizens of the newly independent Texas were overwhelmingly in favor of becoming a state in the US because they were afraid of Mexico trying to take control again. Others agreed because they thought making Texas a slave state would benefit the economy.
  • However, there were also people who thought making Texas a state was unnecessary and would only cause problems between the Us and Mexico; maybe even ending in a war. In the end, Texas became a state in the US.
