  • The Beginning
  • Hello, my name is George the giraffe. I will help you understand Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection of the giraffe, and Lamarks theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics
  • Speciation
  • Competition
  • Variation
  • There are many different types of giraffes including- the Masia giraffes, the Northern giraffes, and the Southern giraffes.
  • Adaption
  • Lamarck argues that the shorter giraffes have a harder time surviving due to competing for food with the taller giraffes. They may find shorter plants to eat from but then they will be competing with other animals for food.
  • Natural Selection
  • Giraffes have adapted to their environment by evolving with a longer neck. With a longer neck, giraffes don't have to compete with many other animals for food.
  • Giraffes also needed to fight others, the long neck facilitates better battles. In intense bouts, male giraffes compete for dominance by steadying their legs and swinging their necks to deliver sledgehammer blows to each other with the stout ossicones atop their heads.
  • Over time the smaller giraffes will die off and the new offspring will be adapted to the environment with longer necks and being taller than the last generation that has died.
