Falling Action / From Now On
In this song, Phillip longs to be with Anne. He keeps saying that they can rewrite the stars, because their background won't let them be able to be a happy couple. Phillip comes from a rich family, and Anne is a trapeze artist who is looked down on. Phillip & Anne truly love each other, but their stars are not aligned. Anne doesn't want to ruin Phillip's life, but Phillip doesn't care for that and wants to be with the one he loves.
Resolution / The Greatest Show
The show must go on.
Charity is upset because of Barnum. He is neglecting his family and is spending way too much time obsessing over fame & money. He is using Jenny to achieve this, and is leading her on as well. Charity says "Hand in my hand, and you promised to never let go" which is a figure of speech indicating that he would never leave her, but these series of events has Charity doubting her and Barnum.
In this song, Barnum realizes his faults. He hurt everyone around him, both his family and the circus while trying to earn money and fame. He realizes that he doesn't need any of those things and he needs the people around him. He needs those who support and love him for who he is. The message in this is that you should embrace your differences and what society might find strange, and that the people that stick with you and love you are the people you should never leave.
The circus is a symbol of our differences and things we are afraid to show the world. We musn't abandon ourselves to try things and do things that are not who we are. The circus is a symbol of the show because the show revolves around the circus. Barnum allowed all of these people who have been labelled as outcasts or thrown out by society, to have a chance at life and do something they love.
