- How does a candidate essentially become a president? Let's find out!

- There are two primaries: open and closed. Primaries are elections in which voters in a state vote for the candidate they want to see on the ballot.
- State primaries are run by state and local governments. Caucuses are meetings run by political parties and state party leaders for selecting delegates. Held at a precinct level.
- Step 1: Primaries and Caucuses.
- Open Primary: Where you declare your party affiliation on the day of election.Closed primary: Declaring patty affiliation prior to election and can only vote for candidates of their party.
- Based on the primary and caucus results, there is a convention party where delegates cast their votes for a candidate. Whoever gets majority, gets all votes. This is the winner-take all system. The party's candidate is officially nominated here and the platform is written.
- Step 2: Party Convention
- Prior to the general election, there are debates, rallies, events, (especially on tv), etc. Candidates will spend time in swing states, which are states that don't have a predictable vote. Candidates will try and make themselves look good before the day of election.
- On election day, citizens vote (popular vote), and popular vote of each state determines who gets the electoral votes of the state. 270+ electoral votes are needed to win!
- Step 3: General Election
- In the electoral college, the system used to elect the president, each state receives the same # of electoral votes as it has members in congress. If there is a tie, House of Representatives decides.
