  • In the beginning of the novel, Montag walks back home while he is joined by his new neighbor, Clarisse. They have a very interesting chat where Clarisse asks Montag a question that ends up changing who he is and how he perceives the rest of his life.
  • "Hey Montag, Are you truly happy?"
  • "Well of course I'm happy"
  • Why wouldn't I be happy, Do I not have what I want
  • Moments after Montag's chat with Clarisse, he walks into his house to be alarmed by the sight of his wife, Mildred, unconscious as she attempted to commit suicide via overdose.
  • My poor Mildred, What has happened
  • Soon after Montag's wife gets better, he gets dispatched to go and burn a house that contained books. As he goes to burn the house with the books, he sees a woman who is not willing to leave and would rather die than lose her books. This sparks something within Montag that makes him wonder what is so important about books.
  • Get out of here, we are here to burn the house and all the books inside it down.
  • I'm not leaving here. There is not life living without my books.
