- The French colonized Haiti and created many plantations with cash crops and forced many slaves to work.

- Toussaint L'Ouverture was born into slavery. He was taught to read and write when he was little and by his mid thirties he became a free black person. He even had his own plantation.

- The slaves got tired of being slaves and decided to rebel against the slave owners and France.

- Even though Toussaint was a free black man, he was still unequal to the white. He had to bow whenever there was a white person present.
- Toussaint wanted to be equal so he decided to join the rebellion. He declared himself leader and fought with France. They burned down many plantations.
- With Toussaint as leader, they won many battles and eventually won the war. After victory, they made their own laws of independence which abolished slavery.
