  • “Rome's an amazing place if you have money. For example, . . .
  • “Not for all of us! What’s so good about your daily life?”
  • The Roman Empire is fantastic! I love going to the forums to shop for many extravagant goods accompanied by my slaves. It’s so nice to be able to afford silks, perfumes, jeweled weapons, and musical instruments. Our proud senators stroll the streets with their loyal guards who march through the streets as well. It’s so nice to be rich.
  • Well I can't go to the forum because I have no extra money to spend on jewelry or fancy clothes. So I have to stay in my dirty disease infested apartment. Our living quarters are horrible, and our children are lucky to live past the age of 10. In order to make a living, I actually have to do hard work that often involves lots of labor.
  • Oh but bless our gods, they protect and provide life for us everyday. I love leaving offerings for my gods, and giving sacrifices to please and honor them.

  • I love our gods as well. However, I may not be able to sacrifice and leave as many tributes behind as you because I do not have the money to give away those things.
  •
  • Well, the lavish dinner parties that I put on for my guests are simply spectacular. My guest may enjoy several meals and music provided by my loyal slaves. I wouldn’t expect you to understand.
  • I would love to have all that but instead I have bread and my apartment is tiny, loud and cramped. Not to mention all of the bugs, rats and diseases that occupy my apartment.
  • That’s not my problem. I can afford to send my kids to education for a while. As they turn 16, they will be educated and ready to find work in a high profession. I’m sure you can’t relate, as your kids have to provide for your poor and needy family.
  • While your sons get to go to school and get an education I have to send my kids to work so we all can eat and survive.
