  • The United States was beginning to grow into major power. It was one of the largest countries on earth, and the borders around it had no real enemies. It also began to acquire influence outside of its boarders. This is how imperialism became a thing. Because America had created connections with places such as Japan, China, and colonies along Africa and Asia.
  • The reason being was because of extractive economies. Which means that the US was in a rush to grab raw materials from other places. The things they collected were iron, tea, rubber, petroleum, and other natural, pure materials.
  • The US built up a powerful Navy. By having imperialist nations build up their military strength. A military historian by the name of Alfred T. Mahan had played a key role in building up the US naval power.
  • One thing called Social Darwinism, was about only how the fittest would survive. It was also the set up for others to believe that other races were superior than other races. It was also defined as people ruling over other cultures they thought were lesser than theirs.
  • The US even bought Alaska, which sparked outrage at first. But Alaska had new and fresh resources like oil.
