- In 1824, several candidates ran for the presidency. Andrew Jackson of Tennessee won the most popular votes, but under the 12th Amendment to the Constitution, if a candidate does not get the electoral vote, the House of Representatives selects the president.

- Meanwhile, John Quincy Adams made an agreement with Henry Clay. Clay would use his power as the Speaker of the House, to defeat Jackson, if Adams made him the Secretary of State. This was called a " Corrupt Bargain. "

- John Quincy Adams won the presidency and Henry Clay became the Secretary of State. This cast a shadow over Adams presidency and Congress turned down most of his ideas. He was not re-elected for another term.

- In the re-election of 1828, there were two political parties. the Democratic-Republicans supported Jackson. They wanted states' rights and not a strong national government. On the other side, the National Republicans, supported John Quincy Adams and a strong national government that would help build roads, a national bank and help the economy.
- This election did not go down without a fight! This type of fighting was with words. Mudslinging was a way to ruin the opponents reputation with insults. Both of the candidates supporters wrote and accused each other of terrible lies.
- In the end, Andrew Jackson was elected as the 7th President of the United States. John Quincy Adams was not re-elected because of the Corrupt Bargain that he made. Andrew Jackson was the President of the people. He promised equal protection and equal benefits for all Americans.
