  • Ideonella sakaiensis
  • People have pollute the whole country with different types of trash just like PLASTIC BOTTLES!!! 50% of this is single-use plastic & only 9% has ever been recycled.
  • Breaks down PET into terephthalic acid ethylene glycol
  • This has gone to the point that some parts of the sea are completely cover by PLASTIC BAGS AND BOTTLES!! for example Honduras. It is estimated that by 2050 the quantity of plastic and fish in the ocean will be the same.
  • Scientists discovered new bacteria called Ideonella sakaiensis which is able to eat plastic bottles. how though?
  • Ideonella sakaiensis breaks down the Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into terephathalic acid and ethylene glycol, then it eats the terephathalic acid and ethylene glycol. (basically the bacteria disintegrates Pet into the crude ingredients which are made from crude oil, making the bacteria able to eat it and use it as a source of carbon and energy)
  • Eats the terephathalic acid and ethyle glycol
  • But is this bacteria safe for the world? we still have to think on how it can be rapidly reproduced, making it that we can easily lost control over it. until it can completely destroyed whole world!! Or maybe save it...
  • But for now, the bacteria is in hands of scientists and is only used in controlled experiments. But who knows maybe in the future it may helps us restaure our contaminated oceans. We shall see!
