- While Rainford and Whitney were sailing in the ocean, during the night, Rainford heard gunshots. He ran to the side of the ship to listen closely.
- CLIMAX
- Rainford lost his balance and fell overboard with a new mission of finding land.
- FALLING ACTION
- On the island Rainford finds a mansion where he is let in by a man named Zaroff. The two have dinner and discuss hunting. Rainoff says that he got bored of hunting after it became too easy so he invented a new animal to kill. Rainford was very interesting and wanted more information.
- RESOLUTION
- Zaroff says that he essentially hunts humans on the island for fun - then invited Rainford to join the game. Rainford was disturbed by the act of cannabalism so he decided to leave. However, Zaroff told him that he would come looking for him to hunt tomorrow.
- As promised, Zaroff appeared with hunting dogs the next day. Rainford ran for his life, leaving a trap that killed Ivan (Zaroff's assistant). Rainford came to a cliff that overlooked the ocean, where he decided to jump. Zaroff believed that he fell to his death, so he went home.
- Zaroff was terrified to see Rainford next to his bed that night after he swam back to the island. However, because he did this, Zaroffs said that Rainford had won the game.
