  • Mr.Chan continued on by saying “Welcome back to another day, today’s a little bit special because today we have a new student in our class. Ren if you could come up and introduce yourself.” Ren rose from her seat and dreadfully walked up all she could remember was her encounter on the bus.
  • All of a sudden, the class teacher Mr. Chan walked in and saw Ren being shown around the class. Mr.Chan slowly walked up to the girls and said “ you’ve seen us stumble on our classroom library, Hi I’m Mr.Chan I will be your teacher, why don’t you come up to the front of the class and introduce yourself.”
  • Mr.Chan saw this and decided to ask the other class why they aren’t playing with the new girl. The class replied “she seems different,” one kid quickly replied. “She isn’t even from here,” another replied.
  • Later that day, Ren was sitting alone at recess just watching the other kids playing around and having fun. All she could remember is her old life and how much fun she had when she was back in China.
  • “Hey Ren, why aren’t you with your new classmates?” Mr.Chan asked. “I don’t think they like me that much,” Ren replied. “Why’s that?” Mr.Chan asked again. “Because I’m different from the rest of them”. Mr Chan understood what she meant. He decided to open up about his culture. “You might now actually know but my family and I also immigrated from China when I was younger. They said that the government was not good there and that we needed to move to a different country for our safety. It was hard for me to get with the culture and get with the surroundings.
  • No one wanted to talk to me because they thought I was different and they’ve never seen people of our kind” Ren was shocked that her own teacher understood her feelings right now. Mr.Chan continued on by saying that “it wasn’t easy for me to transition into a new country. But I think I could help you and the class get to know each other better. Ren was confused when Mr.Chan said that he could help. How was he going to help the other kids understand how Ren was feeling? How would the other students react when they find out why she left?
  • “Anyone wants to start us off?” Mr. Chan said. “Okay, I can start. Before I came to Canada I was in China, I grew up there, my family grew up there, and basically, my whole family was from there.” “If it was so great why did you move?” One student asked. “Well back there the government wasn’t being fair to everyone, he was more interested in himself, therefore my family decided to move to Canada to start something new.” The students were shocked, they never knew this side of Mr.Chan.
  • All of a sudden the bell rang and everyone quickly went back to their classrooms. When Ren and her classmates went back to their class, however, they were shocked to see that all the tables had been moved and all the seats were aligned into a circle. One student asked, “What’s going on Mr.Chan?” “Today we are going to be learning about something else. Today we are going to learn about our ancestors and our individual cultures.”
  • Ren looked around the class and she realized that almost everyone was raising their hand and wanted to talk about how they rose up from leaving their home country and rising up to their new environment. All of a sudden Mr.Chan finally asked Ren if she was ready to share with her class. This time she was not reluctant to share. She finally understood that the people in her class weren’t so different from her. With a deep breath, Ren started to share. “My name is Ren and here is my story…”
  • I’d like to share. Ren looked over and it was the curly hair girl, Sophia. “My family and I moved from Guatemala, Mexico when I was a baby.” Another hand shot up “I moved from Israel when I was 3, I had a close friend and one day I had to leave him, one of the saddest days of my life, but then I realized whatever I do I couldn't replace him but I could find more people like him, therefore I wouldn't forget about him” Mac said.
