- In the doorway, a spectral raven enters, wings outstretched. Its eyes gleam with a mysterious intelligence, and it perches atop a bust of Pallas, casting a shadow over the room."Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, in there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore."
- The scholar, a mix of fascination and fear, addresses the raven. The room is filled with an otherworldly stillness as the raven gazes with an unsettling wisdom."But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only that one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour."
- The room darkens as the scholar, consumed by sorrow and longing, implores the raven for solace and answers.
