- After escaping into Virginia, John Wilkes Booth and David Herold stayed with John Garrett and his family. John Garrett told them they could not spend the night in the house with the family, so they decided to stay in the barn. Garrett did not know who they were but had a feeling they were trouble, so when Booth and Herold went inside the barn for the night, the Garretts locked the door behind them
- When the Union Cavalry found out that John Wilkes Booth and David Herold were hiding in the Garrett barn, they came to the farm and surrounded the barn. They demanded that Booth and Herold come out and surrender. John Wilkes Booth refused to leave the barn. He said, "I will suffer death first." The Calvary threatened to set fire to the barn to force Booth outside.
- When Booth still refused to come out of the barn, the soldiers set fire to it. When the wood started to burn, it lit up the inside of the barn and made it easier for the soldiers to see inside. One of them looked inside and saw John Wilkes Booth holding a gun. He fired at Booth and shot him, and they were able to carry him outside, where he died.
