Hello everyone, myself Bhumika Anand Saxena and today I will tell you about the Khasi Revolt of Meghalaya .
In 1829, theKhasis, a tribe inhabiting the hilly region in the north-west on the border of Assam
The British desired to construct a road......
Yes
No It can't be done it's our territory and we really do not like it.
If a road is build here then it will pass through the territory of Khasi chiefs.
This isn't fair
And, when the British started constructing the road they forced Khasis to work as labours
If we don't work then they will impose more tax on us
Nearly thirtyKhasichiefs decided for turning out the British from hills as well as from plains of Assam.
They made us labourers on our own land
Why you all are taking so long? finish this fast!!!
Even though they refused but they are doing our work and following our orders .
The tribals revolted in May 1829 and fought against the British for nearly four years.
Bar-Manik, the chief ofMolimtribe became their leader. He was supported by other chiefs particularly the chief ofNunklows, Tirut Singh.
The British suppressed the revolt brutally, put up an economic blockade to the territory of Khasis and burnt Khasi villages.
Let's end them
We have to fight.
We can't sit idle.
Yes
We have to do something
FIRE!!!
By the end of 1832, theKhasichiefs surrendered to the British and the revolt was finished. In 1830 and again in 1839, the hill-tribe,Singhos revolted against the British but with no result.
That was the end of our story. Hope you all learnt something new.
