  • Bring me the most expensive soup we have!!
  • I wish that father would let me out of the palace
  • Somebody help me! I'm in pain!
  • What is wrong with that man? I have never seen someone so disheveled and hurt!
  • Siddhartha Gautama grew up in a palace in Nepal in the 500BCE is surrounded by luxury. He lived a pampered life as a Hindu prince. However, he grew up sheltered from the outside world and all of the suffering that occurred outside the palace walls.
  • I have left my pampered life behind to understand suffering. May I join you?
  • Siddhartha was shielded from anything that involved suffering or anguish that took place outside the palace. The reason why was because a fortune teller foretold that if Siddartha left the palace he would become a great teacher but if he stayed within the palace he would become a great king. His father was afraid that if Siddhartha saw suffering he would try to find the truth about life.
  • I feel at peace without any desires!
  • One day Siddahartha was being escorted through the streets of the town when he saw suffering for the first time. He saw an old man, a sick man, a dead man, and lastly a peaceful holy man. After, Siddhartha saw how content the holy man was even though he had no expensive possessions. This inspired Siddhartha to search for peace like the old man and find a cure for suffering.
  • Eliminate all desires and earthly tethers my followers
  • Siddhartha left the palace to seek the truth about life. As he walked through the night he came across a group of Hindu gurus. The gurus taught him about meditation and Brahmas teachings. After training with the gurus he joined a group of religious ascetics. For five years Siddhartha practiced self denial as an ascetic until he realized that it would not bring him enlightenment and left.
  • After leaving the company of the ascetics Siddhartha sat down to meditate underneath a Bodhi tree. He meditated for 49 days and nights and discovered the meaning of life and death. Siddhartha had freed himself of all suffering and had reached enlightenment to become the Buddha.
  • After Siddhartha reached a state of enlightenment he decided he traveled the world to teach others. For the next 45 years he traveled throughout India to teach others about suffering and enlightenment while gathering many followers along the way who would later become teachers to carry on the Buddha’s legacy.
