  • Claudius begins his state of the union address by establishing that he has married Queen Gertrude (his brother's wife) after his brother's mysterious death.

  • Claudius uses the word "son" here as a directive to Hamlet. However, Hamlet is not his true son. It is also suspicious Claudius became king of Denmark rather than Hamlet.

  • Hamlet's aside in this scene demonstrates his true feelings towards Claudius. He is calling out Claudius for his hasty and incestuous marriage to Gertrude and also calling him a jerk. In an aside, only the audience would hear his remarks revealing his true feelings.

  • Claudius very harshly expresses his opinion of Hamlet's continued grief over his father's death despite the fact that his father has only been dead less than two months. Claudius despises Hamlet's grief and calls him unmanly, stupid, and impatient.
  • Claudius demand that Hamlet remain in the court in Denmark instead of going back to school in Wittenberg. Claudius's intent to spy on Hamlet, his suspicions of Hamlet's behavior, and worry about Hamlet becoming suspicious of him is clear.
  • bend you to remain here in the cheer and comfort of our eye
  • In Hamlet's first soliloquy in Act 1 scene 2, Hamlet spells out exactly how he feels about both Claudius and Gertrude. He compares his father to the God of the Sun and Claudius to a half-man, half-goat associated with lechery or lust.
