  • Jalil was Mariam's Dad, Jalil owned a theatre and he was a wealthy man who cared more about his pride than his family members, he excluded mariam and her mom away from his life to keep his name pure. but he was still nice to mariam and would visit her from time to time, he would provide their food and their needs. “One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.”- Mariam
  • Mariam grew up in Herat in a small kabul, and was abused daily by her nana/mother, even though she went through this type of treatment her personailty did not chnage because she had her father who she looked up to and praised her dad. “Learn this now and learn it well.   • Rasheed was a business owner and a shoe maker in the town of Kabul, He lived in a small two story house and had a wife and son who passed, year later he would marry a fifteen year old girl name Mariam, who from Herat. During his first few times with Mariam he would buy her gifts and sweets to charm her, but throughout the book we find out he was only doing this to get what he wanted... a son. Rasheed showed his real side pretty soon when he found out that Mariam could not bare a child. Mariam did not get the same treatment after that and Rasheed would constantyly beat her and verbally abuse her.Where I come from, one wrong look, one improper word, and blood is spilled.   • Tariq is a one legged boy who lives in Kabul, he lost his leg to a landmine when he was very small, he was very nice and charming towards Laila, he would always make her laugh and they would always hangout on the same spot and would always walk down the street together, they were speculated to be a couple by everyone in Kabul. Later throughout the book they get separated because Tariq has to move to Pakistan due to the war thats happening.
