Macbeth is troubled with guilt and stress, he overthinks every situation and thinks of every possible outcome. It does not benefit him and only drives Macbeth to become more mad.

Macbeth tells his wife that his mind is full of scorpions and that there are still threats to his longevity. He says that he has "a deed for dreadful note" intended for Banquo and Fleance.
The two murders hired by Macbeth show up with a third unknown member. As Banquo and Fleance dismount from their horses, the three men successfully kill Banquo. Fleace is able to get away but the murders take Banquo's body to Macbeth to tell him the news.

Macbeth is told about Banquo's death and the escape of Fleance. When he goes to sit down, the ghost of Banquo is sitting at the table. Macbeth is distraught and the guests are confused because they cannot see the ghost. Lady Macbeth tries to put the guests at ease but they are suspicious of Macbeth.
The three witches meet with Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft. Hecate is enraged at the witches for messing with Macbeth without consulting with her beforehand. Hecate declares herself as the superior of mischief, she then vanishes and the witches go off to prepare their charms.
Lennox travels to Scotland where he walk with another lord. They discussed what has happed within the kingdom and both men suspect Macbeth as the murderer. Fleance has been officially blamed for the murder, but he has managed to escape.
