  • Cheever: Why--He draws out a long needle from the poppet--it is a needle! Herrick, Herrick, it is a needle!
  • Cheever, embarrassed, glancing toward the mantel where sits MARY WARREN'S poppet: I spy a poppet, Goody Proctor.
  • Cheever:... So will you hand me any poppets that your wife may keep here?
  • Elizabeth:...Why, this is Mary's.
  • Elizabeth: I never kept no poppets, not since I were a girl.
  • In this scene in Act II of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, many are gathered around in the Proctor's house. Ezekiel Cheever asks Elizabeth if she has any poppets in her house because they are trying to find evidence of witchcraft, voodoo in this case. Elizabeth confidently answers no, but Cheever spots Mary's poppet that she gave Elizabeth earlier that day. They take it and examine it when they find a needle stuck inside of it. Elizabeth looks very suspicious since Abby was just mysteriously stabbed with a needle earlier that night. Cheever and Herrick believes that Elizabeth's spirit pushed the needle into Abby. They see this as enough evidence and take Elizabeth away in chains.
