  • Genus of extinct great apes from middle to late Miocene in Europe around 12 million years ago. A male weight around 97 pounds and teeth are similar to modern day chimps. It features a broad nose that is nearly vertical to the face, a wide roof of the mouth, and a long muzzle. Overall, the face bears numerous resemblances to that of a gorilla.
  • Oreopithecus existed nine to seven million years ago in the Tusco-Sardinian area, when the territory was an isolated island in a series of islands ranging from central Europe to northern Africa in the Mediterranean Sea. Weight around 35 pounds, the snout was short, the nasal bones were high, the neurocranium was tiny and globular, the orbital plane was vertical, and the facial bones were gracile.
