From inside a cell, Paul writes to the churches of Ephesus. He starts off with a prayer for those reading the letter, asking them to be blessed with many things.
He then begins our passage, where he talks aboutsalvation by grace through faith, and our call to walk in God's good works.
The first step of the interpretive journey is the TEXT IN THEIR TOWN. We see that Paul is writing to the churches in a large city, hoping that they will be inspired in their faith, and live hearing God's inspired word.
STEP TWO: Measuring the width of the river
Different food, religious beliefs, rules, geography
Many copies/ translations of bible, and other new resources
The next step in the IT isMEASURING THE WIDTH OF THE RIVER that gaps us and them.Besides the obvious differences, the gap between us and the churches that Paul is writing to is minuscule. When we talk about our sinful nature, and short coming of God, we are not far from them.
STEP THREE: Crossing the Principle Bridge
Paul says throughout Ephesians that we are "saved by grace through faith" as well as brings up phrases such as "But God" and many other principles that may apply to us.
The third step of the IT, CROSSING THEPRINCIPLE BRIDGE, can be difficult sometimes.
STEP FOUR: Checking the Biblical Map
"Surely he would not let her wash his feet if he knew how much of a sinner she was"
"you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair."
Luke 7:36-50. A story of salvation through faith for a sinful women.
The fourth step of the IT is CONSULTING THE BIBLICAL MAP. What does the rest of the Bible say about our principle?
The final step, TEXT IN OUR TOWN. How do we apply this principle that we got from these old scriptures to our lives today
In this case, there are many supporting passages for our principle throughout the Bible.
STEP FIVE: Text in Our Town
For me, I felt called to share my story with kids in need. I shared my personal connection to this passage, and related to the kids I was mentoring because they came from broken families just like me. Everyone can live out the passage in the way they feel called, just like verse 10 says.
