- In the busy town of Mopti, twelve-year-old Mariam lived with her family. She had four younger siblings—two little brothers, Amadou and Ibrahim, and two sisters, Fatou and Amina. Mariam’s mother, who had grown up in Kenya, often shared stories of school and books. Her father worked in the mines and hadn't gone to school for long, but he always said education was important.
