The narrator explains how he doesn't feel comfortable with the blind eye of the old man he works for. The narrator calls the old man's blind eye the vulture eye. He doesn't have any problems with the kind of man, he just doesn't like his vulture eye.
The narrator crept into the old man's room for a week to check on his vulture eye. After a few days, the old man was woken up while the narrator was opening his lantern inside his room. The narrator shined a streak of lantern onto the old man's vulture eye. All of a sudden, the narrator started hearing the heartbeat of the old man. Thinking his time had come he launched himself toward the old man, who let out a loud shriek. But the narrator didn't hesitate to kill him. He cut up the old man and buried him under the wooden boards.
3 officers come to the old man's house because a neighbor reported a loud shriek coming from the house. The narrator told the officers he just had a nightmare and invited them into the old man's room because he felt secure that he wasn't going to get detained. He got the others and himself chairs and he put his on top of the floorboards where the old man was buried in. But as expected, he wouldn't get away with the murder. He started to hear the same heartbeats he heard when he was about to kill the old man. The officers started laughing and chatting. The narrator thought they were making fun of him. He started getting anxious and desperate because of the sounds he was hearing and the fact they wouldn't leave. So he yelled at them and told them to open up the floorboards to find the dead old man.
