  • Good Morning Paul, please take your seat.
  • No! I don't want to. I don't have to listen to you!
  • Principal Jones, I have a student named Paul that refuses to listen.
  • Ms. White, Paul has a behavioral disorder known as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). It's when a child shows a constant pattern of madness, irritability, arguing, and disobedience toward adults.
  • Paul, sit in your seat and do your work!
  • You can't make me! You're not my mom!
  • Wow, that's really mean.
  • Paul, why do you keep acting so defiant?
  • I feel lonely and sad. No one's ever around the spend time with me so I'm going to do whatever I want!
  • Principal Jones, I tried to be patient with Paul but nothing seems to be working. Do you have any suggestions?
  • Maybe you can try problem-solving therapy as that might help Paul identify and change his thoughts that lead to bad behavior. Social skills training in your classroom will also help Paul become more flexible and appropriately interact with his classmates.
  • Good job taking your seat Paul! I'm very proud of you.
  • I'm learning problem solving strategies and how to ask for a break when I'm frustrated. This helps me to calm down and gather my thoughts instead of acting out.
