Candy went looking for Lennie in the barn but instead found Curley's wife dead. By the way that Lennie was the only one in the barn and one who could do it, he easily assumed that he is the killer. Being in a group with a plan that will be effected by this with Lennie and George, Candy goes find George. Candy brings him to the barn.
Once in the barn, George could tell what happened without being told.Candy asks George if he thinks they'd still be able to achieve their dream. George says that the best scenario for Lennie right now is for him to go to jail. He also hopes to be able to collect what was suppose to be Lennie's share of the home's pay..
Because George doesn't want to be suspected of helping Lennie, he asks Candy to pretend he was never there. George tells him to call the other guys over as though Candy just discovered the body. He must wait while George goes to the bunkhouse. Candy shouts to the people throwing horseshoes.
While in the bunkhouse, George takes Carlson's gun. To conceal the gun's presence he puts on a denim jacket. George is suspicious last to arrive at the scene. Curley is also quickly able to assume Lennie is the killer and is incredibly angered by this.
Curely orders his workers to get armed and ready to attack Lennie. This is exactly what George feared. Carlson is unfortunately unable to find his gun. Carlson assumes it was Lennie and gets the stable buck's shot gun instead.
When George finds Lennie at the river they planned to meet at if something bad happened, he shows no anger. Lennie asks to be told what their dream is in what are his final moments of life. George tells him about a beautiful home and rabbits as he reluctantly takes the lugar out from his denim jacket and shoots Lennie.
With the presumed idea that Lennie had taken the gun George could easily confirm that it is what happened.
