  • Man vs. Self
  • "I gathered all that remained of my strength in order to break rank and throw myself onto the barbed wire." (Wiesel 34)
  • Man vs. God
  • "Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?" (Wiesel 33)
  • This shows man vs. man because he is wanting to keep his shoes. But instead, the German tent leader took his shoes from him.
  • Man vs. Nature
  • "Don't let yourself be overcome by sleep, Eliezer. It's danger-ous to fall asleep in snow. One falls asleep forever. Come, my son,come...Get up." (Wiesel 88)
  • This shows man vs self because Elie is contemplating whether hr should have a slow death or just go ahead and throw himself on the electrical barbed wire and die instantly.
  • Man vs. Society
  • "Men to the left! Women to the right!" (Wiesel 29)
  • Eliezer is confused because he does not know why the Germans would kill, and does not know why God could let such a thing happen.
  • This shows Man vs. Nature because Elie is fighting nature right now. He can either get up and keep living or he can stay in the snow and sleepthe, which will let nature win cause he will die.
  • This is man vs. society because the men to the left and woman to the right is a law/rule that is being forced upon them.
