On Douglass’s new planation he is treated unfairly by his master, Mr. Covey. Mr. Covey yells, curses, whips, and treats the slaves cruelly.

Frederick Douglass is worked so hard on the plantation that one day he collapses and can’t get up. But, even in his terrible state, Covey continues to beat him.
Resolution
Mr. Covey will never whip me again!
Douglass makes friends with a fellow slave named Sandy Jenkins. Sandy was visiting his wife and invited Douglass to tag along. When Douglass was leaving Sandy’s house, Sandy gives Douglass a root that should protect him from being hit by Mr. Covey. Douglass reluctantly takes it and carries it with him.

That root will protect you from being hit by your master!
When Douglass returns from Sandy’s house, Covey corners Douglass in a barn with a whip. But, Douglass had enough, he fought with Covey for nearly two hours. Douglass ended up winning and Covey had to face defeat.
After Frederick Douglass wins the fight against Mr. Covey, Mr. Covey never hits, whips, or yells at Douglass again. This was a turning point in Douglass’s life because it fueled and rekindered his fire for freedom.
