- Scene 1

- Duke Orsino is introduced into the scene in the land of Illyria. Orsino is madly in love with Olivia, who is mourning for her dead brother and not accepting any man's love. Orsino is sad about this decision from Olivia.
- Scene 2
- "Who governs here?" (1.2.68)
- "A noble duke, in nature as in name, Orsino." (1.2.69 & 71)
- A girl named Viola finds herself stranded on the shores of Illyria with a sea captain that crashed their ship. Viola is scared, but it seems that the sea captain knows the lands that they are stranded On.
- Scene 3
- "Your niece will not be seen, or if she be, it’s four to one. She’ll none of me." (1.3.213-214)
- "She’ll none o’ th’ Count. She’ll not match above her degree, neither in estate, years, nor wit. I have heard her swear ’t." (1.3.217)
- Viola believes that her brother (Sebastian) died in the shipwreck, and she clings to all hope that Sebastian is alive. The sea captain says that it is by chance that she was saved, but there is also a chance that Sebastian could have been saved. He saw someone attempt to save Sebastian as the ship was crashing.
- Scene 4
- "Therefore, good youth, address thy gait unto her. Be not denied access. Stand at her doors and tell them, there thy fixed foot shall grow till thou have audience." (1.4.265)
- "I'll do my best to woo your lady." (1.4.293)
- Viola wants to work for the governor of Illyria, Duke Orsino. Since Olivia is a female, she can't work for Orsino, but she comes up with the idea of dressing up as a man to become his servant. Olivia comes up with the fake male name Cesario for herself.
- "I'll serve this duke. Present me as a eunuch to him." (1.2.101)
- Maria, Sir Andrew, and Sir toby are introduced in this scene. Sir Toby is Olivia's uncle, and Sir Andrew is a knight that Sir Toby wants to marry Olivia. This poses a problem for the Duke, since there is competition for Olivia's non existent love. This scene proves that Olivia will not be willing to accept love from anyone no matter their identity.
- Viola ended up working for Orsino under the name Cesario. Orsino asks Viola to follow through with a very interesting task. Viola is commanded to woo Olivia on his behalf. Viola agrees, and goes sets off to win Olivia's love for her master, Duke Orsino.
