  • In 1162 Henry I appointed his good friend Thomas Beckett as the Archbishop of Canterbury in the hopes that he would help him control the Church.
  • WHO WILL RID ME OF THIS TURBULENT PRIEST?!
  • In 1164 Beckett refused to agree to the Constitutions of Clarendon which would have limited the Church's power and increased the King's power. Henry put Beckett on trial but he fled to France.
  • In 1170 Beckett returned to England after the Pope helped Henry and Beckett overcome some of their differences.
  • Beckett asked the Pope to excommunicate some bishops who had helped the King over the Church. This angered Henry so he shouted 'WHO WILL RID ME OF THIS TURBULENT PRIEST?!'
  • Four knights who overheard the King shout, rode to Canterbury Cathedral. They claimed Beckett a 'traitor to the King and the kingdom' and murdered him.
  • The four knights were excommunicated by the Pope. Henry stated that he did not ask for the murder but still felt guilty so agreed to be whipped by priests whilst praying for forgiveness.
