- Before Grendel raised from his darkness and brought it with him to Herot, the kingdom was happy and joyous. They would dance and play music in the hall; their music and happiness bothering Grendel below. They would rejoice in poems and songs.
- Beowulf and the King
- When Grendel entered the scene, he killed men and tore them apart in their sleep. He would drag them back to his home to eat. He spread fear, killing anyone who had tried to stand up to him.
- The Battle With Grendel
- Beowulf heard the word of Grendel's crimes and decided to gather men to Herot to defeat the creature. He was able to convince fourteen men easily due to their love for him. Their omens were good so they had left, leaving wise ones missing Beowulf's absense.
- The Battle With Grendel- Arm
- Beowulf introduces himself as a man who follows Higlac and explains his reason for coming to their land: to defeat Grendel. He explains the background of fighting. He asks the King to grant them, Beowulf and his men, the task to defeat Grendel.
- The King allows Beowulf a chance to defeat Grendel. They have a place to sleep inside Herot; Beowulf stays awake and waits for Grendel. Grendel rips apart one of Grendel's men in their sleep.
- Beowulf's men tried to defeat Grendel but it was all to waste as their weapons proved useless against Grendel's enchanted skin. We learn that a weapon cannot harm Grendel so when Beowulf uses his own hands to stand against Grendel, Grendel is terrified by the man's strength. Grendel is so terrified by Beowulf that when the man has his arm, he endures the pain of it ripping off just to get away and die alone.
