Typically divided into Northern, Southern, and Owens Valley, and the Washoe often divided into Northern, Southern, and Owens Valley. The Great Basin culture area encompassed the arid region that stretches west from the Rocky Mountains to the Sierra Nevada. To the north is the Columbia Plateau, and to the south is the Mojave Desert.
