Flip this coin. If it’s heads, you’re a guard, if it’s tails, you’re a prisoner.
ARREST OF PRISONERS
Surprise! You’re under arrest!
DAY 1
Zimbardo put them into pairs and asked them to flip a coin in order to randomly assign the roles of guard and prisoner fairly.
Day 3
He asked local law enforcement to make the mock arrests, without the participants knowing, to make the situation more realistic.
Day 5
They were strip searched and delouses. They had to wear a uniform that barely covered them, a stocking cap and an ankle chain. They could only refer to each other by numbers.
Day 6
The guards became more brutal, refusing to let prisoners leave cells. One prisoner showed signs of anxiety but wasn’t allowed to leave until day 4.
Please let me out!
The guards made prisoners clean toilets with their bare hands. At night when guards thought prisoners weren’t looking they sexually humiliated prisoners.
Their power was almost total and prisoners obeyed without question. A visiting post graduate objected strongly and convinced researchers to stop the study.
