  • Scene 1: The Job
  • Marwah is your typical generation z teen. When sheisn'tat the mall shopping for the latesttrends, she is tracking them with the hours she spends scrolling through socialmedia. She listens to Harry Styles while doing her hair, and never leaves the house withoutmascara. While others might criticize her generation for being too woke, she prides herselfon being a liberal and how accepting her generation is. While she rolls her eyes at yet another tweet calling liberals“sheep” she is applying for her first minimum wage job. She is applying to be apart of the working class.
  • How is anyone not a liberal in 2022!!
  • Imagine all the clothes and makeup I can afford with a job!
  • Scene 2: Domination
  • After repeating her memorized lines perfectly for the interview,Marwah was put to work on the spot. Despite feeling overwhelmed with all the new information being taught to her,she noticed the social interaction between the crew and the manager. The once kind man who just hired her was now acting like a dictator. All his interactionsare based on domination. After getting to know hercoworkers, she learns it is the constant state of fear of being fired that keeps them going and not breaking down. They don’thave a choice as they need to pay the bills. It was either obey or starve. Despite being degraded in the back they put up a cheerful and positive attitude in the front. It was evident that part of their wages was going towards their front stage performance.
  • Will I get fired next?
  • Do as I say! Or else.
  • Scene 3: Power
  • With only one day at work,Marwah sees the businesspeople she served at work and walked past on the street in a different light. It isevidentwhen theyignorea homeless person. It'sas if they looked right through him, they had no empathy. Only power. How can people live in poverty while simultaneously being surrounded by so much wealth?Seeing the power imbalance reminded her of the same situation at work. "Why do poor people exist"? She slipped out at the bench on the way home. The person next to her replied ‘communist propaganda”.
  • Stop spreading communist propaganda!
  • Why do people live in poverty, despite living in one of the richest countries in the world!
  • Scene 4: Research
  • What is a communist? Communism as in North Korea? Was I just insulted? This led Marwah to dive deep into research. Despite research essays not being her forte in school, she enjoyed the extra hours of reading she did on the topic. Instead of listening to Harry Styles while doing her hair, she was listening to socialist fight back podcasts. She also started reading books by Karl Marx and on conflict theory.
  • I am tired of peoples biased opinions. What does it truly mean to be a socialist?
  • Scene 5: Class Consciousness
  • As she went back to work, The sense of cultural scaffolding and the environment of domination her boss created angered Marwah. The fact that her and the crew ran around for 8+ hours a day , producing thousands of dollars for the company angeredher even more. While her manager who only gets up from watching soccer to yell at them and the owner who rarely comes in gets the biggest paychecks, the ones who put in the work to generate the revenue are getting paid the scraps. This is whatKarlMarx described as class consciousness.
  • The boss makes a dollar, while I make a dime. Even though I am doing all the labour!!
  • The job turned Marwah from a liberal to a socialist. Despite her co-worker's differences in gender, race, and religion she preached that they all had to come together as the working class. At the end of the day, it will always be the working vs capitalist class. If they wanted better working conditions, it was time to unionize and for society to fight back. Ironically, she now agrees that liberals are sheep. Blindly upholding capitalism for the rich under the facade of wokeness and the myth that reform can solve all our problems.
  • Scene 6: Fight Back
  • Working class vs. Capitalist class!!
  • The working class needs to join together and demand better working conditions.
