Gallaudet meets Clerc when he attends a public demonstration given by abbé Sicard in London. Later Clerc offers to go to America with Gallaudet to help establish a school.
ASL borrows from French

In 1817, Gallaudet and Clerc rent rooms whereAlice Cogswell becomes their first student to enroll.
In 1818, Gallaudet and Clerc get a congressman from Connecticut to sponser the school and grant then 20,000 acres of land were they would build their school.
Because Clerc taught French sign, students of his blended their own created native language with his teachings. This evolved into ASL.
