Mildred has her friends over to hang out and watch tv. Montag reads them poetry from a book. Mildred's friends became disgusted and started crying. Mildred tried to calm her friends down, but they leave mad and threaten to report Montag.
Mildred told on Montag for having books. Montag's boss Beatty forces him to torch his house (with the books inside) after he is supposed to be arrested.
Montag kills Beatty with the flame thrower after his house is burned. Because of this, "The Hound" is set on Montag's scent. Montag escapes and visits Faber.
"The Hounds" scent is thrown off because Faber gives him new clothes. Montag comes upon a group of elderly men who Faber had informed him about; they are social misfits who were once professors. They are memorizing hundreds of books in anticipation of the day when people will again enjoy reading. They also live in the woods, away from everyone.
